About Us

Created in 1993, the Governor's Office of Community Service and the Governor-appointed Montana Commission on Community Service promote and expand national service and community volunteer opportunities across Montana, strengthening the Big Sky State’s legacy of neighbors helping neighbors.

Hundreds of AmeriCorps members serve Montana each year, building upon the work of the over 10,000 Montanans who have answered the call to national service with AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and VISTA since 1994. While you’ve likely hiked past our members maintaining your favorite trail system, national service is more than just chainsaws and Carhartts. In 2019 alone, AmeriCorps members in Montana:

  • Helped 40,585 income-eligible Montanans access affordable legal assistance.
  • Served 6,322 veterans and families of veterans.
  • Served 6,548 Montanans over the age of 55.
  • Treated over 1,135 miles of rivers and – chainsaws in hand – improved 12,438 acres of public lands.

The Governor's Office of Community Service administers federal funding to AmeriCorps State programs in Montana. The federal funding is provided by the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency.

Montanans know firsthand that service is critical to the fabric of our communities. Many of us volunteer with schools, nonprofits, and local government. The Office of Community Service provides a comprehensive array of technical assistance and support to both national service programs and community service organizations in Montana.

Reach out to us at serve@mt.gov to share your service story and learn more about how you can serve. Look around our site to learn about the many opportunities to serve with AmeriCorps, recognize impactful volunteers with a ServeMontana Award, apply for a Youth ServeMontana Scholarship, learn more about organ donation, and read the State Service Plan.

Through our service, we ensure Montana stays the Last Best Place.
