Sample Transfer Letter:

Dear AmeriCorps Member,

On April 21, 2009, the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act (SAA) was signed into law by President Obama. This law authorizes individuals to transfer the Segal Education Award with limitations on who can transfer an award and who can receive a transferred award.

Our records reflect that the education award earned by you is eligible for transfer. Your Segal Education Award can be transferred to your child, grandchild, or foster child.

To transfer an education award, you must (1) have earned the award in an AmeriCorps State or National; (2) have been aged 55 or older on the date you began the approved term of service; and (3) have begun that term of service on or after October 1, 2009.

You may transfer all or a portion of your unused education award. Once transferred, you may revoke any unused amount prior to the expiration of the award. However, please note that you can only transfer each eligible award once.

The recipient to whom you transfer the award can use the award to pay the cost of attendance at qualified institutions of higher learning or to pay qualified student loans. The recipient can receive transfers from multiple education awards but only up to the current value of two full-time education awards.

If you wish to transfer your education award, please log in to your My.AmeriCorps.gov account. If you have not already registered to use this website you will need to click the link to “Create Member/Alum Account”.
If you have questions, please contact the NATIONAL SERVICE hotline at 1-800-942-2677.
