Since 1994, AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA members completing their service in the state of Montana have earned more than $16 million in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards. Education awards earned through AmeriCorps can be used toward furthering a member’s education whether through a traditional four year college or other courses such as those offered at Sage Technical Institute and Aerie Backcountry Medicine.

Some of the more surprising data presented in the map above is the large dollar value of education awards being distributed to New York, Pennsylvania and Georgia. These three states stand out in the data due to the presence of either federal lenders, or large federal loan processors. Consequently, many of the dollars reaching Montana institutions (coming in in the form of federal loans) are not represented in this data.

Upon earning an Education Award, AmeriCorps Alumni have seven years to use it to attend school, purchase education supplies, or to pay off student loans. Those who are 55 and older when they serve can transfer their Education Award to children or grandchildren. Education awards can be used at Title IV colleges and universities as well as trade schools, apprentice programs, and outdoor education programs.
