9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance


September 11th, 2013


In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Each year, millions of volunteers across the nation spend the day helping others and participating in community service projects.

In honor of the September 11th Day of Service and Remembrance, National Service members and volunteers in Montana are teaming up to show their appreciation for the victims, survivors, and emergency responders of 9/11.

Here are some of the events happening in your area. We encourage you to get involved!


Banners of Thanks

Senior Corps' Foster Grandparent program will be making banners for the military at the Billings Educational Academy.

Blanket Drive

Senior Corps, the Human Resource Development Council, and the Gallatin Valley Food Bank will be stationed at the mall to collect clothes, blankets, and food for those in need.

Food Bank Gleaning

Senior Corps and Food Corps are teaming up to collect extra produce from community gardens and deliver to the Butte Emergency Food Bank.

Brush with Kindness

Campus and community volunteers will provide painting and minor home repair for local veterans.

Great Roll Out

AmeriCorps Vista members are hosting a toiletry drive. Donations will go to veterans at God's Love Homeless Shelther, Helena Veterans Affairs, and the YWCA.
Monday, September 2nd through Wednesday, September 11th, donation boxes will be placed at 7 Department of Public Health and Human Services buildlings.
From 3pm to 8pm on Wednesday, September 11th, donation boxes will be placed at Safeway, Albertsons on Fee Street, and Vans Thriftway.

Heroes Lunch

Seniors Corps will be providing lunch at the Park County Senior Center to honor current military and fallen veterans, local law enforcement, fire departments and those in public service.

Gifts for Service Men and Women

Seniors Corps will be collecting gifts to send to active military. Gift suggestions include: DVDs, games, small bug sprays, candy and treats, notepads, pens, stationary, prepaid phone cards, and hot chocolate mixes.

Miles City

Harvest for Seniors

Seniors Corps will be collecting extra garden produce to be donated to seniors in need.

Great Roll Out

AmeriCorps VISTA members will be collecting toiletries and in-kind donations at various locations around town to benefit the YWCA of Missoula.

Bike, Bus, Walk Week Celebration

Montana State Parks AmeriCorps will be celebrating healthy transportation in Missoula by hosting an overview of the park's proposed trail development followed by a short ranger-led walk down to the Bandmann Flats area of the park.

Ravalli County

Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Campaign

Senior Corps members, the Ravalli County Prevention Coalition, and volunteers will distribute magnets with the address of a prescription drug drop box to increase prescription drug abuse awareness among seniors.

Veteran Stand Down

Veteran Organizations, Senior Corps, and various non-profits are putting on Veteran Stand Downs across the state. Organizations will be providing outreach, resources, and surplus gear to homeless veterans.
